Thumbs up Handmade protective lid (warning: large img's)
As promised, a brief overview of my UX protective lid construction.

The primary purpose of the lid is to protect the screen from physical impact while carrying the UX in a soft pouch or in a bag. It's hand made in ~6 hours from two pieces of acrylic glass (1.5mm and 6mm), 6 screws, and 2 bottles of beer (not pictured)

Features
  • Transparent (I don't have to open the lid to work with the UX)
  • Works as a multiple angles stand (in straight and reverse positions)
  • Easy to remove, no UX modification necessary.
  • Doesn't interfere with any vents, controls, or memory stick port in any position (except the keyboard when closed)
  • Have a precisely shaped opening for the fingerprint scanner (works without opening the lid too)
  • Provides rests for the index fingers (no more accidental activation of the camera button)
  • No permanent joints (easy to replace parts with just a screwdriver)
  • Lightweight (1.5oz)

Future improvements
  • Red colored replacement glass to preserve night vision at night (I'm amateur astronomer), should work well as a sunshade day time.
  • Locks on the back plate (as on the original SONY stand)
  • Hand tightening screw for the hinges (not all stand positions are stable enough)
  • More fancy looking screws and maybe a black plastic for the hinges (just for aesthetic reasons)

Images

The UX on the images is a bit dusty - took them right after the coarse sanding.

AWESOME work seriously, but just adding little thoughts,on these three position i think it would be more safer to add something thing in the back so the UX doesn't drop form that position if you working on it,good for watching movies though.

Nice job on the mod. I like how it can also be a stand.

Great protective cover!

Here's another idea...craft a "shoe" that raises the UX enough so that I can plug in the power adapter. This way i don't have to bring the dock and i don't have to jury rig my own thin power adapter tip.

I was thinking of an improvement like this...

1) A rubber support to avoid slides on the back leg.
2) An extended leg in front to have space for DC input...
