Has anyone bought a Q1U?

Postby MathProfJohnson » Sat Jul 21, 2007 03:41

In other forums they are discussing a screen issue that is causing many to send their units in for repair or refund.

I have a Q1 but because of battery life and no WWAN it barely gets used. Anyone have a Q1U and want to share their thoughts?

I have a Q1U and I use it the most. I also have an OQO model 02, a p1610, an X41 Tablet, and several different laptops. My main machine when traveling is the Q1U.

Having that large 7" screen makes all the difference. Also, the battery life is very good. Performance is weak, but it's adequate for me since I'm mainly doing e-mail, browsing, and using MS Office.

I think the Q1 Ultra is a great machine (800mhz Intel A110 CPU, 1024x600 7" screen, 2GB RAM), and in some ways even superior to the UX - much longer battery life (standard 4 hours, extended 8 hours!), 2GB RAM is great for Windows 7, great speakers for a UMPC. I actually use it more often than the UX. The only real drawback is the slow A110 800MHz CPU. Only if you overclock it to 1GHz does the machine start to come alive. I have a Samsung 64GB SLC SSD on it to make it even more responsive.

fxx do you still get the battery advantage of the q1 ultras 4 hours on a standard battery with the different CPU?

tomn, when you overclock the q1 ultra, how much more battery does it now use?

It is good to see some other umpc's in the arena still ;)

Bigs,

When I overclock the Q1U A110 to 1.06GHz (the highest it could go), the battery usage is slightly higher (maybe by another 10-20%) but not really noticeable. I think this is because we can't adjust the voltage, hence the increase in power consumption is not really that much. The performance increase IS noticeable though.

Yes, I have a ton of UMPCs sitting in my closet. Good to get them out once in a while and play with them. Reminds me of the good old days.

I would love to have the Core Solo CPU in the Q1U form factor. The Q1UP is great except the size/weight is a bit too much for me. I think the Q1U is almost perfect, now if someone could transplant the Core Solo to the Q1U.....
