Touhscreen + Camera help please

Postby DogTurd » Fri Mar 25, 2011 21:40

Hello, I am relatively new to Linux. How do I install egalax_calibrator_x11 so that I can calibrate my touchscreen on my UX under Ubuntu 10.10?

Do I have to use Synaptic Manager?

Also I'm hitting my head up against a brick wall trying to get the camera to work as well?

Thanks

This is the error message I am getting when trying to compile the driver.

I posted in the general section that the screen on my UX is toast. Until I get a replacement I would still like some help on this please to point me in the right direction. Thanks

hmm it has been a long time since I installed my fresh start into ubuntu. I believ`e you may need to install additional libraries like build essentials to do with compiling before you can install egalax_calibrator_x11. The ux is so well made that the one time calibration is only needed once. Plus you can get the calibration data and copy it into a txt file in case egalax is not supported in the future or you use another distro.

I am sure I installed it the same way you have, but without the error messages. Good luck with getting your refund. Very sad that the white screen of death is quite common with older UX.

thanks for the adivce Bigs. The above compile error was for the Camera Driver. I didn't even get as far as the touchscreen calibration as I don't know how to download the egalax driver. Can you point me in the right direction?
thanks

Further update on anyone wishes to use the camera on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maveric).

The Palmix project is closed http://www.palmix.org/r5u870-en.html

But someone on Ubuntu forum has modded the kernel and got it working..

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1592330&highlight=r5u870

I would try it out but with the old famous white screen I will have to wait until I get another UX again.

Just leaves the touchscreen calibration now to work out.....

Hi, its been over half a year since I installed and setup my ubuntu lucid.

This links shows what to do using terminal to install the egalax program

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Egalax-Touchscreen

as for the camera I useded the palmix method, as it works with lucid. Lucid has long term suport as opposed to maveric so is still very much a current distro

Update: I was unable to obtain Egalax drivers and if I'm being honest the whole install process looked a bit daunting! So instead I did some digging and found the following calibration software written for Ubuntu that works on 10.10 Maveric. I've installed and confirmed touchscreen UX working.

excellent work dogturd! It is good to have more than one enthusiast finding new ways to setup ubuntu ;)

We need some good support for 10.10 since I don't want to upgrade. 10.04 gives long terms support

Cheers mate. Yep, its fun learning new ways to do things. Hoping we can get more UX users on Ubuntu and spread the knowledge and advice.

One thing thats bugging me is the mouse button on the top right hand side of the UX when using Ubuntu dosen't act the way it should normally. If I touch the mouse it selects text and moves stuff around. Is this meant to work in Ubuntu?
