web cam working ubuntu kernel 2.6.32

Postby bigs » Fri Apr 01, 2011 20:28

Hi just wanted to share for those who are using newer kernel for ubuntu and want the built in web cam to work, go here and download the 2 deb files i386

http://download.tuxfamily.org/arakhne/pool/universe/r/ricoh-webcam-r5u870/

Install the deb that says firmware first using dpkg or nautilis installer, then use apt-get install dkms, followed by the last deb vola web cam working!

The previous method for installing was found on the palmix website. This method worked up to kerenl 2.6.30, which is considered old.

not sure when that port will come since the number of users using osx on the ux is small, have you tried plugging external web cam via usb into osx? I know ubuntu supportsalot of usb one natively without additional driver installation.

Oh for those installing the ux web cam using the method above. Be warned once web cam driver is installed and running, you will lose ability to hibernate or suspend. It just freezes the ux on resume. One method is to uninstall the webcam driver everytime you finish using it before you hibernate or suspend.

Lucky though I found a solution to fix it properly, so you can hibernate/suspend flawlessly with web cam driver installed.

The key is to edit scripts for suspend and resume. In this case in terminal goto /etc/pm/sleep.d/

From here make a .sh file in super user mode. In my case I called it 99-r5u870.sh. Make it executable +x then put the following script into the new file

#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
hibernate|suspend)
modprobe -r r5u870
;;
thaw|resume)
modprobe r5u870
;;
*)
;;
esac
exit $?

basically what this does is unload the the camera module before suspend and restores the module after resume, thus allowing the driver to remain installed but in an off state. This stops the camera driver interfering with the ability to resume after suspend or hibernate.

Enjoy

Very strange... Followed the instructions, reboot.

Fired up Cheese and camera works and can take pics. Fired up Skype, camera shown as Sony VGP-VCC3 #1 (/dev/video0) But unable to see anything or take pics? Any ideas anyone please?

Sorry what is modprobe?
Ignore that I think? I ran modprobe r5u870 in terminal - still no joy

I followed these instructions as they are for 2.6.35 Kernel
