[Application Thread] MacOSX on Vaio UX

Postby sev7en » Sun Jun 03, 2007 12:23

11.Applications and Useful Tools

Here's a list of "must-have" applications and tweaks to help you get the most from OSX and your Vaio UX device. The post will be frequently updated as well as with your requests and new proposals.

When you submit a new software please add a brief description, the license type (free, commercial (trial, shareware, demo)) and a link to download it. Freeware or opensource software would be preferred but if you feel a piece of commercial software could be useful, you are welcome to post that as well!

• VisualHUB (Commercial, Enhanced version of iSquint)
Converting a bunch of AVI files to a DVD shouldn't require a Computer Science degree.
Getting movies from your digital camera to your iPod shouldn't take hours.
Wading through a sea of video formats shouldn't pull you under.

VisualHub bridges the gap between numerous complicated video formatting standards, and people that just want to get the job done - just what you would expect from the Mac. If you're looking for something a little more flexible, VisualHub's up for that challenge too. An extensive Advanced panel lets you change all pre-set aspects of encoding...and then some.

Based on the popular, award-winning "iSquint" conversion software for iPods. If you've used iSquint, you already know how to use VisualHub. If you've never used iSquint, you won't have a lot of catching up to do anyway.

• LiquidCD
LiquidCD is a freeware for burning CDs and DVDs built for Mac OS X.
But LiquidCD is more than a burning software and has useful built-in features. LiquidCD can save some CDs as a disk image. Simply insert the media to be copied, then choose Copy a CD in the Copies panel. Now choose save as disk image in the disc menu. Supported CDs are multitrack data CDs with a single session. Supported CDs for cue/bin files creation are multisession-multitrack Data CDs and Audio CDs. In the preferences, you can choose to save the pregap duration.

Apparently this is ignored by some other software, such as Toast, that will simply append blank data to the end of the audio track and set the pregap duration to 2 seconds. Since this isn't the expected behavior, pregap duration saving function is disabled, you have to manually activate it if required. Unsupported CDs for cue/bin files are CDs with multiple block size, such as Extra CDs or VCDs. If you wonder why some CDs cannot be duplicated or saved as disk image: - Multisession CD is not supported by the .iso format, only one session can be saved in the disk image. That's right, even DiskUtility cannot do it.

• You Control: Tunes
You know who you are. You’ve got thousands of song titles in your iTunes music library that you are constantly adding to and you’ve got a playlist for every occasion. You listen to your music at work and while you’re playing. So when you want to change a song or browse all of the albums by your favorite artist or just pause the currently playing song, why should you have to stop what you’re doing and go to iTunes? You shouldn’t have to, and now you don’t.

You Control: Tunes is a free utility that gives you complete control over iTunes from the Mac OS X menu bar. You don’t have to stop whatever it is you may be doing, switch to iTunes, take care of business and then go back to your original app. You can now simply pull down your very own custom menu that gives you access to the iTunes controls (Next, Previous, Volume, Play/Pause, Stop) as well as displaying the current track, artist and album. You can also navigate your entire iTunes music library from this menu as well so you never leave your current application.

• VirtueDesktops
VirtueDesktops is a virtual desktop manager for Apple’s Mac OS. It offers features, eye candy and configurable options that no other desktop manager on the mac has added yet. Sadly, VirtueDesktops is no longer under active development. It is based upon the work done by Rich Wareham on DesktopManager (specifically the CGSPrivate headers), which is an alternate open-source virtual desktop application. VirtueDesktops includes a small amount of Rich’s code from DesktopManager, which means that presently it is licensed under the GPL.

• Quicksilver
A unified, extensible interface for working with applications, contacts, music, and other data.
At first glance, Quicksilver is a launcher. When opened, it will create a catalog of applications and some frequently used folders and documents. Activate it, and you can search for and open anything in its catalog instantly. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognize which items you are searching for based on previous experience. It also supports abbreviations, so you can type entire words, or just fragments of each. When not in use, Quicksilver vanishes, waiting for the next time you summon it.

• NuFile
No more banging your head against huge dialog boxes.

NuFile (pronounced new-file (Nu is a greek letter)) is a contextual menu plugin. It adds a new file menu when you right click at a folder(ie: desktop or Finder background); just like what you can do in Windows. With this menu, you can create an empty file of your favourite type with just two clicks ("it's just one click if you hold the button down"- - Endian). It's a time saver especially if you have a two-button mouse (ex: Apple's sleeky mighty mouse) or if you use RazzFazz's iScroll2.

MainMenu is full of powerful maintenance tools to keep your Mac running like new, within a slick, simple interface.

• ScummVM
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the game, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

Image

Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.

Among the systems on which you can play those games are Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2, PSP, PS2, SymbianOS/EPOC and many more...

• DOSBox
DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, MacOS X...

Image

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games... You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource.

• Dapplegrey
Dapplegrey is a frontend for the MacOS X DOSBOX binary (which you can get from http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ ) written in REALbasic.
With Dapplegrey you can easily set options the DOSBOX binary gives to you w/o having to enter them manually using the Terminal.

Image

The name Dapplegrey comes from the german word Apfelschimmel which originally means a white horse, ambiguous with the meaning of a rotten apple (assuming using a PC emulator like DOSBOX rots your Apple Macintosh, which isn't really true).

• MacMAME
MacMAME is part of the MAME project, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of arcade videogames via emulation. MacMAME achieves this by running the original program code found in the arcade games. As such, it is much more than a reproduction, it is essentially that same game running via an emulated layer inside your Macintosh.

Image

MAME is an application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software, with the intent of preserving gaming history and preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The name is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.

The first public MAME release (0.1) was on February 5, 1997, by Nicola Salmoria. As of version 0.115 (actually the 159th proper release), released May 6, 2007, the emulator now supports 3574 unique games and 6659 actual ROM image sets and is growing all the time. However, not all of the games in MAME are currently playable; 830 ROM sets are marked as not working in the current version, and 33 are not actual games but BIOS ROM sets. The project is currently coordinated by Aaron Giles

• Genesis Plus
Genesis Plus features very accurate emulation of the original Sega Genesis, even to the point that some software which has problems on the real hardware (Sonic Crackers, for example) exhibits the same behaviour under emulation.
