By the way Bigs...........I sent Anh three messages asking if he still did the upgrade service. The first one I sent was on 12/23/2014 and the other two were both on 3/30/2015. So...I think you might be right on what you suspect. My only question is why? WHY HAS THE UX GOD FORSAKEN US??? Nah...just playing. It sucks though...because now I have to venture out on my own to find someone to install the U7700 processor. And...when I find this person...not only will they NOT have the same appreciation for the GREATEST UMPC in existence like Anh had...but they may also ask the same ol' question that most people ask. "Dude...what is this.......a big ass phone?" You know what...when I said I was just playing earlier...scratch that from the record.

Good idea, you would probably be best look for a hi tech industry or electronics repair shop rather than a computer shop, as installing BGA is not standard practice for computer shops as it requires proper tools like an infrared heat source in a lab environment. You only really get one chance to apply the BGA cpu onto the board. If any of the ball grid connections fail to adhere correctly, the process cannot be repeated for that connection, and the whole chip has to be removed and start over. Apply too much heat and the CPU or the mainboard may be damaged. Sometimes when removing a BGA chip, the module can also be damaged, so usually reusing BGA chips is not recommended.

Hey Bigs...thanks for the advice. I was just going to call some computer shops around town too. You saved me. You saved me AND my UX. I'll call some electronic repair shops instead. I have to make sure they're top notch though. That would suck if they didn't know what they were doing and they killed my UX. Dang...now I'm nervous. Maybe I should wait for the return of Anh.

Been over a week now and no reply from Anh. Sorry to say he has gone. Suspect after the UX mod craze dies down, he decided to close shop rhardwares and even though I have his email, he has not responded.

I guess other than using your local BGA chip installer, there is no way to upgrade the UX cpu.

Long live the existing u7700 anh UXes!!

Darn that Anh.......DARN THAT ANH TO HECK!!! Nah...just playin'. I will however find a BGA chip installer...even though no one can do it like Anh can. He will always be a legend in my book. Thanks again for the advice and the link Bigs. By the way...do you know if there are any fully functional Windows 7 Drivers for the UX on this site or anywhere else for that matter?

Good luck with your en devour to getting the CPU upgraded. As for Windows 7 drivers, I am no expert in that area, as have not used windows on my UX for like over 4 years! With windows it is very memory hungry when compared to linux, so I went the linux route and have never turned back.

If you look up older posts, you can find out all the customization's one can apply for linux. Most of the UX hardware works without extra drivers, except the finger print scanner, and rear camera and touch pointer which requires external drivers and configuration.

For me, there is one feature not many people understand or know which I find invaluable when running linux, and that is the ability to over ride the internal cooling fan speeds. In Linux I have over drive the fan to a much higher speed to accommodate for the heat dissipating of the modded core2duo CPU. This is extremely important for those that hate the CPU throttling issue when the CPU hits past 64 degrees C.

just found a link, someone is selling their modded u7700 UX with all accessories. It is rather pricey, but it comes as a complete modded package ie no more modding required. This may be way for someone to own a very rare UX!

Welcome back Anh!!! it has been a long time indeed!! Hope all is well with you. Good to see you are back in the mod business again

On another note for all those custom UXes out there. As you probably already know, the U7700 gets really hot, and any way to help dissipate heat is always welcome. For those that may have applied "Artic Silver 5" or similar high performance CPU thermal paste between the copper heat spreader and the CPU, it is probably about time to disassemble your UX and remove the old paste and replace with new paste.

The only reason I know is my UX developed a slightly noisy fan issue, which I resolved by applying 3 in 1 oil into the bearing. To get at the fan I had to remove the copper spreader from the CPU and not surprisingly, the paste had all dried up over a period of 3 years. Upon replacing the thermal paste with new arctic silver 5 I have noticed my temps drop far quicker once again like it did 3 years ago when I first applied arctic 5.

So for those using their UXes for extended periods of years, one may consider "servicing" your UX by lubricating the fan, cleaning out dust, and reapplying thermal paste once every 2 years.
