I had upgraded the drive in my Vaio PCG-B100 two years ago from 30 to 100gb and then the processor failed. I was told tht a drive upgrade did not void the warranty, and in fact, I was told to ship my unit for repair without the drive, and all the repairs were covered. I did not have to open the machine to do this however, but if one does it carefully, I suppose that no one has to know.

Does anyone know if the Hitachi ZIF and the Toshiba ZIF connections are the same?

I found the Hitachi 1.8" 60 Gig for around $135 and the Toshiba seems to be $250+

You know the difference between the Euro and the USD?! :p
But I agree, even 250 USD (~ 200 Euro) are a bit too much.

The 60 GB Toshiba is 8 mm high and it (still) fits the UX models perfectly. The original 30 GB HDD is only 5 mm high but the additional 3 mm of the 60 GB HDD are NOT a problem. There is enough space inside the UX.

I opened up my 180P tonight and it is pretty slim in there with the EDGE antenna on the back, it was interesing to remove the tape holding the EDGE wire down next to the hard drive. I am going to order a MK6008GAH tomorrow and see if it will fit in there. the 180 is a bit different than the UX50 but I think it may still fit in there. I wanst brave enough to see if the CF slot was still in there or if the EDGE modem is fixed on the board.

The rest of the unit seems pretty modular though, the panel that houses the EDGE antenna is removable and looks like you could snap a blank panel right in like the UX50.

If the CF slots not there it would be kind of interesting seeing as the sony power/battery manager has the option to turn the CF slot off to save power (UX-180 model).

Anyone tried turning it off, does the edge go out (lose connection)?

The 60gb drive fits just fine in the UX180. I swapped the drives between my UX and my 60gb ipod video last weekend. Works perfectly.
