Compatible USB/Firewire Optical Drives

I tried several DVD-R/RW USB Drives for notebooks. All of them work fine with my UX380N.
All of them can boot, but only from one USB located on UX, and not from replicator.
If UX can boot from DVD-R/RW USB Drive, then one can be shure that it will be installed and work under Windows.

If it works with the UX280, it should work with the 380 (the hardware isn't that different) - the only problem that you could possibly face is Vista incompatibilities but according to LG's site, the drive is Vista compatible.

Less than $10 shipped. Used it with some laptop scrap DVD/CD-RW combo drive. Works perfectly! Also it looks like I'm saving some weight on an external case for that DVD/CDRW

For all those that do not really need an optical drive all that often and need to restore the OS in a pinch...
Try one these

and an inexpensive IDE DVD drive.

I dual booted with vista and during my tweeking I damaged my XP partition on my UX280P.

Nothing would work and I remember I had one these USB to SATA-IDE adapters laying around and just about anyone has an IDE drive they can borrow.

Without hesitation I proceeded to recover my PC and I saved my own day. LOL

Any way is good to have one of these converters around in an emergency.

Undocked the drive is recognized but won't boot.

Any other good choices for DVD drive? Usb powered only. And it needs to power using one usb cord, not two. Want something I can run off of UX itself.
