Successor to the UX?

Postby tomn » Tue May 06, 2014 05:58

I have recently acquired a few potential UX successors:

1. Sony Vaio Tap 11 Core i7 256GB SSD - This is a beast of a tablet, runs everything fast (have not tried latest games yet) and feels every bit as fast as my i7 laptop but at 1.7lbs! The screen is excellent but the keyboard is terrible. Size is much larger than UX of course, but it is the smallest/thinnest/lightest Sony you can buy now.

2. Dell Venue 8 Pro - This is a pocketable form factor for your coat/cargo pants. I brought a foldable bluetooth keyboard and it is definitely a decent alternative to the UX. The latest generation Atom seems pretty speedy, and 64GB SSD is sufficient for my use.

Besides these two, the only possible successor to the UX is the Viliv N5, but the 32G SSD and slow 1.33GHz Atom is no where as versatile as the UX, as I can get more done on the UX than on the N5.

Any other toys you guys have been playing with that might be a potential successor to the UX in 2014?

I have done tons of research on UMPCs. For me it has to have a mouse and keyboard and be under 9 inches to fit my needs. Also I need at least a 1ghz CPU and a gma 950 or higher. The gma 500 and 600 are useless to me.

There are plenty of ultra portable computers to choose from if you truly do your digging. You won't find them on ebay or amazon though.

As far as a true successor to the ux? No. The world isn't ready for it for some reason. Such a device does not exist. The ux is the best there is one it comes to a umpc especially if you're going to be playing games like I do.

However if you really want a successor to the ux why not build one? I'm thinking of doing this with a friend. There are many pico its motherboards out there with Apus that have a decent dual core CPU and even a dedicated gpu. Up to 4gb ram. Loads of ports. It may be bigger than the ux but you could still make it quite small if you put some effort into it. I'll definitely make a post here if I end up making something, but sadly such a device does not exist unless you don't mind having just a touch screen.

My dream is an nvidia shield that runs windows x86 or x64!

Did you try the Dell Venue 8 pro or similar Atom Baytrail chips? They seem to have pretty decent graphics and can even support full HD+ displays as large as 2500x1500 pixels. It might just fit your needs, and the screen size is 8" which is below your 9" requirement. You will be surprised how responsive and decent these tablets are able to run classic games, maybe even some relatively modern ones at very low settings. The Baytrail is a true quad core CPU + Intel HD graphics, and systems built on it feels a lot speedier than the UX with a good SSD.

I just can't stand when the mouse and keyboard are a separate thing. I may want to look into the dell venue pro for a mod I've been wanting to do where I split a controller in half and mount the two halves on each side of a tablet. The size is perfect for that.
