Wow Tomn, so what you are saying is that the GMA500 in the P series is superior to the GMA950 in the UX.

I used to find the GMA950 was quite poor when it came to playing HD MKV 1080p, but after installing a recent driver update, my CPU usage playing HD video dropped to almost half. So now with the standard battery I can get easily 2 hours of HD playback and still have juice to spare. In the past with the older drivers, I was lucky to get 1.5 hours on the standard battery. Obviously using the extended battery, playback time will be around double.

I really never had success with the P series and HD MKV. Although when you play blu ray file on the P series, it can handle 1080p HD effortlessly, so effortless, the P series will not overheat. Tests were done playing the same video file looped for over 24 hours on the P series in a warm room ,and it never missed a beat. I was using the stock VAIO setup using Windows Vista. Playing RMVB, and AVI standard def files on the P would result in overheating within an hour usually. I think this means the GMA 500 was really optimized for Blu ray HD file content, but like you said, maybe a driver update would fix these issues., which I will have to test out.

Bigs, yes I do prefer GMA500 over GMA950. You are using Linux and there was a recent driver update, but for Win 7 the latest driver was released in 2009, so not much has changed. I can't play 1080MKV on my UX smoothly, where you can do it on your U7700.

On Vaio P you are right - it is optimized for Bluray and H.264 HD files, but the standard def stuff is pretty good as well, the only problem was Netflix HD. Perhaps the later drivers fixed those issues. Let me know if it works well.

I think there is a better Windows driver for GMA950 to improve gaming - The Sherry drivers at perhaps I will try it and see if it improves HD performance.
